Reading, Writing & Phonics

Reading & Phonics

We use Read, Write, Inc. (RWI) to teach reading in school.  The children in Early Years, are split into small groups each morning to be taught in smaller groups as they learn a new sound, review old sounds and develop their reading skills, with an aim of becoming accurate and fluent in their reading.

Once your child is settled into school routines, your child will be heard reading as part of their daily phonics session every day. As part of the scheme all children will be continually assessed and provision for them will be reviewed and adapted, to ensure their needs are being met and enable all children to make good progress.

Handwriting

In Reception, we teach children how to form their letters in the pre-cursive handwriting style. In pre-cursive handwriting, children practise forming their letters with lead-ins and lead-outs, which then ensures the letters start and finish in the correct place ready for when they begin joining their letters later on.

Every letter starts with your pencil ON THE LINE and as we lead-in to each letter we say "enter up...". This is followed by the corresponding rhyme for each letter, taken from our Read Write Inc phonics programme.

Click HERE to view the rhymes for each letter and HERE to watch video demonstrations of how to correctly form all letters from a-z.

Help your child to practise writing their name in this style, remembering that capital letters DO NOT have lead-ins.

We hope that you find them useful and enjoy practising letter formation with your child!
