Miss Pugh

Welcome to Year One!

Ash Class

Miss Pugh

Mrs Swindells & Mrs Crawford

Welcome to Ash class!

What a fantastic term we have had. Well done to everyone working so hard. We have lots of exciting things coming up in year 1 this Spring term.

Our text this term will be "Toby and the Great Fire of London” and “We completely must go to London” linked to our History and Geography topics this term.

Our writing and topic work will be focused around these stories  with maths and science having a discrete focus. We hope to share lots of the children's work on this page and our Twitter page so keeping coming back to check of our progress.

This is term we will be changing our phonics scheme to Read Write Inc which will hopefully have a fantastic impact on the progress of our children’s reading. We are super happy with the fantastic progress we have already made in Ash class and I hope this will continue into the new year. We would appreciate continuous support with lots of reading at home and encouragement to practise the phonics they will have been learning each week.

Please ensure that your child brings their reading book, along with their reading diary, into school everyday. We will read with your child once a week. During this one to one reading time your child will have the opportunity to change their reading book for a new one. Please support and consolidate your child's learning by reading with them as often as possible at home ..... every little helps!

PE is every Thursday but please make sure your child has their PE kit in school every day as, on occasions, we have extra PE/sport sessions during the week.

Please pay for milk using the online "cool milk" service (

Homework is set on Friday and is due back in school the following Tuesday. All homework set will be linked to the to the books that we will be reading in our AOL lessons. As you are now aware, we are sending extra homework home focused on letter formation and maths. Please give this ago with your child as we are already seeing improvements in their work in school - keep it up!

Spellings will be sent home on Friday and will be tested in school on the following Friday. All spellings will be based on the phonic sounds that you child will have learnt throughout the previous week in their phonics lessons. We will be starting phase 4 and 5 phonics this term so please check our website for resources if you are unsure on what needs practising at home :)

Thank you for everyone who has volunteered so far to read with Year 1 it has had a huge improvement on reading!
Do you have an hour to spare?! We are always looking for parents/carers/grandparents to help with hearing children read. If you are able to spare any time whether it be a morning, afternoon or just an hour, please get in touch via the school office or one of the adults in Year 1.

Please return consent forms if you haven't done so already so that we are able to put some lovely pictures of Ash Class on our class page :)
