The BIG question: What did the Ancient Greeks do for us?

In Summer 1 we will be exploring Ancient Greece. As part of our topic, we will be learning about the battles of Alexander the Great, the Olympics, the gods and goddesses and much more!

English in Cedar Class

This half term, we will be reading the text 'Blue John' by Berlie Doherty. The Queen of Darkness lives deep underground beneath a mountain with her child, Blue John, a boy she made from the blue of the glacier and the hot yellow light of the sun. Blue John is forbidden to leave his mother's side, but the lure of the light above is too strong. When a singing, dancing girl comes to the caves, Blue John must make a choice between darkness and light. A heart-warming story that embraces the beauty and colours of the natural world.

"The icy purple heart of a glacier

The hot gold rays of the sun

A child made from light and from darkness..."

Multiplication Times Tables Check

In June, Year 4 will be participating in the new standard Multiplication Check. This will test speed as well as knowledge. Please encourage your child to use Timestables Rockstars as well as the website below.

 Useful Information

Homework will be given out on a Friday and should be handed in by Wednesday. A sheet in your child's book will provide an outline of what homework is expected each week.

Times tables

Please remember to encourage your children to continue working on mathletics and their times tables throughout the week. The knowledge of the times tables are of high importance to help with other aspects of Maths. The mathletics logins have been handed out-

Times tables tests take place on a Friday morning. Please ask your child which times table they are currently working on and test away! Your child has also been allocated a 'Times Table Rockstar' username and password where they can earn points for their knowledge of each times table and associated division facts. Let's see whether they can reach the Gold times table challenge or beyond!

All children will need the correct PE kit and trainers/pumps for their PE lessons which will take place on a Wednesday. However, please ensure children always have kit in school in case there is a change of day or an extra session. Swimming begins after the February half term. More information will follow.

Reading and Bug Club

Reading books and reading records should be brought to school everyday. Please try to listen to your child at home as frequently as possible. The children also each have a Bug Club user ID and password allocated to them where they can read books online. This also enables them to answer interactive comprehension questions which will develop their reading skills further.

Useful websites for learning at home

Timestables Rockstars- All children have a login for this website (stuck inside their homework book).

Tablesmaster - A great way to practice times tables at home.

Mathletics- all children have a log in for this website (stuck inside their homework book) and activities will be set each week.

The times tables check website is a great way to pick up speed.

Topmarks has some fantastic games for maths- particularly the children have loved the fraction games recently.

The children love to play daily 10 to increase speed and fluency in different areas of maths- particularly times tables!

Newsround - Make sure you are keeping up with current events!

National Geographic Kids - A lovely site for children to learn more about animals, wildlife and the world around them.

BBC Bitesize - Full of information that covers a range of topics.

The school run website is also great for explaining in more detail to adults some of the subjects or topics which children may get for homework.
