We use Read, Write, Inc. (RWI) to teach reading in school. The children in Early Years, are split into small groups each morning to be taught in smaller groups as they learn a new sound, review old sounds and develop their reading skills, with an aim of becoming accurate and fluent in their reading.
Once your child is settled into school routines, your child will be heard reading as part of their daily phonics session every day. As part of the scheme all children will be continually assessed and provision for them will be reviewed and adapted, to ensure their needs are being met and enable all children to make good progress.
Handwriting
In Reception, we teach children how to form their letters using the print handwriting style. At Whitby Heath we follow the Read Write Inc. programme for the early stages of taught handwriting and aim to make the physical process of writing – handwriting – enjoyable from the start, so that children can see themselves as ‘writers’
The Read Write Inc Phonics programme teaches letter sound correspondence through a set of mnemonics.
Each letter has a mnemonic to help children remember its sound and how to form the letter. See below:
Help your child to practise writing their name.
We hope that you find this useful and enjoy practising letter formation with your child!
