Read Write Inc. Phonics

Keep up with phonics by watching and taking part in your daily phonics lesson at home!

Click HERE to visit the ‘Ruth Miskin Training’ YouTube channel, where you can continue with your phonics lessons and pick up from where you left off before the Spring break!  Each lesson can watched live or at any point over the next 24 hours!  You will now notice that there are 3 short sessions daily for set 1 sounds and 2 short sessions daily for set 2 sounds.  These need to be watched in the order they appear below.  Each day, children can now; learn a new sound and recap previously taught sounds, learn to read words with the new sound in, as well as words with previously taught sounds in and they can practise using 'Fred Fingers' to spell words with the new sound and recently learnt sounds in.  It is a super resource, that used regulary will really help your child to continue with their phonics learning at home and come on leaps and bounds with their reading and writing!  If watching both/all 3 lessons every day gets a little too onerous, try and ensure you keep doing the 'Speed Sounds' lessons daily and have a go at the 'Spelling' lessons when you can!

Watch Set 1 if your child is in Mr Biddle’s and Mrs Golding's phonics group

Watch Set 2 if your child is in Mrs Buttery’s/Mrs Williams’ and Mrs Bell’s phonics group.

(Your child should be secure in reading the sounds taught within the set they are learning speedily, as well as being able to speedily read words containing these sounds before they are ready to move on to the next set.  Please do not be tempted to move them on to learning the next set of sounds too soon as this could result in a lot of confusion for your child!  We will advise when we think it might be a good time to try your child with learning the next set of sounds!)

If your child is in Mr Biddle’s group, they were reading ‘sound blending’ books at school.  They may need to continue with these and can move onto ‘ditties’ if they can blend the sounds to read simple cvc words like cat, mop etc.

If your child is in Mrs Golding’s group, they were reading ‘sound blending’ books.  If they are now able to blend the sounds to read simple cvc words like cat, mop etc. then they are ready to move onto reading ‘ditties’.  Once they can read those easily, they will move onto ‘red’ storybooks.

If your child is in Mrs Buttery’s/Mrs Williams’ group, they were reading ‘ditties’ and moving onto reading ‘red’ storybooks.   Continue to with ‘red’ storybooks. When you feel they are beyond these it might be good to try them on the next level, ‘green’.

If your child is in Mrs Bell’s group, the majority were reading ‘green’ storybooks.  When you feel they are beyond these, it might be good to try them on the next level, ‘purple’.  If your child was one of the children on ‘purple,’ start with these and try them with pink, when you think they are ready to move on!

  • To access a collection of paper ‘ditties’ please click HERE
  •  If you feel your child has made good progress since they were last at school and can now read beyond the level suggested for their phonics group, click HERE to find a progression chart, showing what colour comes next to try and move your child onto!
  • Please note, children should be secure in all the sounds in the books that they are reading and should be able to read them speedily, as well as words that contain them, to develop fluency! Don’t be tempted to move on too quickly, remember asking them lots of questions whilst reading is just as important as the reading itself!
