Queen of the Falls - Summer 1

Our new and very interesting topic is all about the tale of Annie Edson Taylor, a daredevil who was the first woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. The book 'Queen of the Falls' is fictional biography of her life, detailing the events which lead to her performing this amazing stunt!

Adrift Project - Spring Term

This half term we are focusing on the exciting book 'Wisp: A Story of Hope' by Zana Fraillon. We are using this as well as the wonderful play entitled 'Adrift' by the Action Transport Theatre to learn all about refugees. The children will be exploring what life is like for refugee children in today's world and will consider the conditions that have lead these children to fleeing their homes.

Cedar class had a wonderful time creating some artwork based around art from a range of different refugee countries such as Afganistan, Syria, Sudan and Iraq. The children created some initial designs and then used marker pen to transfer these to some cotton squares. They used a range of inks to then bring the pattern work to life!

 Useful Information

  • Homework will be given out on a Friday and should be handed in by Tuesday. A sheet in your child's book will provide an outline of what homework is expected each week.

  • Please remember to encourage your children to continue working on mathletics and their times tables throughout the week. Times tables tests take place on a Friday morning.

  • All children will need the correct PE kit and trainers/pumps for their PE lessons which will now take place on a Wednesday. However, please ensure children always have kit in school in case there is a change of day or an extra session. Swimming begins after the February half term. More information will follow.

Reading books and reading records should be brought to school everyday. Please try to listen to your child at home as frequently as possible. The children also each have a Bug Club user ID and password allocated to them where they can read books online. This also enables them to answer interactive comprehension questions which will develop their reading skills further.

The knowledge of the times tables are of high importance to help with other aspects of Maths. Your child will have a weekly times table test. Please ask your child which times table they are currently working on and test away! Your child has now been allocated a 'Times Table Rockstar' username and password where they can earn points for their knowledge of each times table and associated division facts.Let's see whether they can reach the Gold times table challenge or beyond!
